FAQ on Solar PV

Q. Is there a cap on the amount of energy I can sell back to the grid?

A. The microFIT rules apply to solar systmes to 10kw or less. System larger then 10kw will be subject to different rules and requirements. As most residential solar installations do not exceed 10kw, the mircoFIT rules will apply.

Q. What happens if I sell my house with a Feed-in Tariff contact?

A. In the case where a generator is moving, contracts can be assigned to the new parties - the new buyer. If you wanted to take the PV systems with you to your new address, you will have to apply for a new Feed-in Tariff contract with the Ontario Power Authority.

Q. Will I need to claim earned income for income tax purposes?

A. Yes. The net income amounts earned by a Participant under a Contract are considered income from a source that is either business or property. Your home’s electricity costs are considered a personal expense that is not deductible for income tax purposes.

Q. Why the delay in going solar?

A. Prior to the announcement of the Ontario Green energy Act, which includes the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program, going solar was generally considered to be out of reach for the avergae homeowner. The new Feed-in Tariff program makes investing in clean energy abailable to a large segment of the population.
